Descendientes de J. Palacios presents this wine from Bierzo (Spain), crafted from Mencía grapes and presented in 0.75L format Corullón (PR) Type: Red wine crianza Producer: Descendientes de J. Palacios Denomination of origin: Bierzo (Spain) Grapes: Mencía Bottle: 0.75L Rating: If Pétalos is the regional wine, capturing the different personalities of Bierzo, Corullón is the municipal wine, the wine of the Villa de Corullón. It’s a wine marked by power, the intensity of slate soils and the vigor of old vineyards, between 60 and 100 years old, and at the same time, by the elegance of a velvety texture. Summary based on Ricardo P. Palacios’ assessment: Bierzo is a heterogeneous area, with great diversity of soils, altitudes and exposures, and Mencía is a capricious variety when it comes to ripening, but this lack of uniformity was especially notable with an unbalanced cycle start due to climatic conditions that continued until harvest, offering different ripening rhythms on the same vine. Winter was mild, with temperatures reaching 25°C in February, and little precipitation: only 578 liters in an area that usually receives about 800 liters of rain. Due to the mild temperatures, plants began budding early, too soon, and April frosts and unexpected spring precipitation (more than 150 liters) not only caused unbalanced vegetative development but also a flowering period that extended up to a full month for the same vine. Summer was fortunately mild and moderately humid, but this lack of uniformity did not facilitate the harvest date decision at all. Harvest finally began on September 14th, later than usual, in the sunniest areas of Corullón, San Martín and Fontelas, continuing with Moncerbal on October 19th, Las Lamas on the 20th, and ending with la Faraona, the most mysterious vineyard. Climate variability is common, but Bierzo will never cease to surprise us. The vintage ultimately offers wines with great vitality and elegance, wines full of millenary knowledge, in which rigidity and vigor are revealed wrapped in aromatic nuances and delicious flavor.
