The Pruno Red Wine was chosen by Robert Parker as the best value for money of 2015. It belongs to the Finca Villacreces winery and has the Ribera del Duero designation of origin (Castilla y León). It is made from two grape varieties; Tempranillo (90%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (10%).
The harvest is carried out manually, in 15kg boxes and once the grapes are collected, alcoholic and malolactic fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks. Finally, it is left to rest for 12 months in 3-year-old French oak barrels.
It is recommended to serve at a temperature of 16ºC. Robert Parker chooses Pruno as the best value for money wine of 2015 ahead of two other Spanish wines, and in 2010 it was highlighted by Parker as the best Spanish wine in history for under 20 dollars. Due to this new recognition, Pruno is positioned as number one worldwide in terms of high-scoring wines at an affordable price. This wine has been nicknamed the “baby Vega Sicilia” and was featured by “The Wine Advocate” in its list of best recommendations. Bodegas Finca Villacreces Villacreces extends over a 110-hectare estate, 64 of them vineyard, settled on a meander of the Duero river, in the heart of the Golden Mile of Ribera del Duero. This vineyard is divided into 15 plots of tinto fino (tempranillo), cabernet sauvignon and merlot varieties, interspersed with a centenary pine forest of great environmental and landscape value. Finca Villacreces emerges as a unique vineyard, conditioned by the diversity of soils where it is planted, ranging from extremely sandy areas near the pines, to very rocky terrain where stones from the alluvial deposition of the Duero predominate. The poor soil naturally guarantees low yields of around 4,000 kg/hectare. Finca Villacreces is planted at 700 meters altitude above sea level and experiences an extreme climate, with great thermal oscillations, long winters and dry summers with low rainfall. However, the forest surrounding the estate provides it with a special microclimate that protects the vineyard from the most aggressive climatic circumstances. At Finca Villacreces, quality-focused viticulture is sought, where the vineyard self-regulates to limit production to less than 2 kilos per vine. In turn, these vineyards are cultivated following integrated viticulture criteria, where the vine’s natural condition is controlled and preserved to obtain wines with the personality and typicity characteristic of Villacreces.
