D.O. Bierzo
The Bierzo region is located in the northwest of the province of León, within the Autonomous Community of Castilla y León, and occupies an area of 2,954.28 kilometers, which represents 18% of the provincial surface. The vineyard in El Bierzo is characterized by fragmentation of plots, smallholder property and sloping terrain, from 450 to 800 meters. Its soils have a silty-loam texture, moderately acidic, with absence of carbonates, typical of humid climates. The hillside soils consist of a mixture of coarse elements, quartzites and slates. El Bierzo has a very special microclimate, very suitable for the region’s crops. The natural barrier of the Sierra de los Ancares calms the impetus of Atlantic storms and generates a continental climate, with Ocean influence, appropriate for vine cultivation, which receives the adequate amount of rain and sun.
